Had a nice dinner at Matuski Japanese Restaurant in Cantonment Road a few nights ago. It's been awhile since I go "japanese"!!! It's been years since I last went there.
Matsuki is in one of those big bungalow houses along Cantonment Road. It is along the stretch between Gurney Drive and Kelawai Road traffic lights. The premise if of a 1960s big bungalow house, therefore parking is not a problem. Need not wind up stories after stories to look for a parking lot.
Since there were only two of us, we could not order an array. Just enough to fill our tummies.
We had the Wakadori Chicken. It comes with deep fried crispy well marinated chicken (skin and all) in terayaki sauce. I always like terayaki sauce for my japanese food (something which is equivalent to my tnee cheoh for my local dishes and BBQ sauce for my western servings!!!). The chicken comes in a moderate portion with a bowl of rice and stash of chopped cabbage with thousand island and a slice of tomato and some cucumber. The set includes cawanmushi (steamed egg in a cup - very soft like eating tofu fah with a small piece of chicken meat and it was still hot), a bowl of soup and two mouthful size of honeydew. There was also a few pieces of preserved vegetables.
There are a variety of bentos (box set in japanese???). I ordered a simple one...a good serving of rice, few slices of raw sashimi (salmon, yellow tail and octupus), tempura (two average size prawns, two pieces of potatoes and one piece of egg plant. At least it is not soaked in frying oil.) and a hefty (for a bento) piece of grilled fish. This too, comes with cawanmushi, soup and fruit. We had a side order of egg sushi.
The pricing here is quite reasonable. The ambiance in nice. The parking ample. Good place for a relaxing meal. It stirs up my "craving" for Japanese food again!!!
