...alfred hitchcock - the master of suspense...

Master of suspense, the rotound producer and director, Alfred Hitchcock was born on 13th August 1899 in London, England to a strict Catholic family. He had two older siblings - William and Eileen. His father died when he was fifteen.

He started showing his artistic skills when he first joined the film industry, drawing sets. He got his hands on directing in 1923, in the movie "The Number 13", but the production stopped. He then replaced the director of "Always Tell Your Wife" when the director fell in. He also began to talk to Alma Reville after know her for awhile.

Hitchcock then directed The Lodger" in 1927 and on 2nd December the same year, he married Alma and a daughter was born in 7th July 1928. They named their little baby girl, Patricia.

The Hitchcocks moved to America after the success of some of his British movies, "The Man Who Knew Too Much" (1934 - starred Leslie Banks, Edna Best and marking the debut of the great Peter Lorre in his English speaking movie, though not much dialogue for him), "The 39 Steps" (1935 - Robert Donat, Madeleine Carroll), "Secret Agent" (1936 - John Gieguld, Madeleine Carroll, Peter Lorre, Robert Young) , "Sabotage" (1936 - Sylvia Sidney, Oskar Homolka), "The Lady Vanishes" (1938 - Michael Redgrave, Margaret Lockwood, Dame May Whitty, Paul Lukas) and "Jamaica Inn" (1939 - Charles Laughton, Maureen O' Hara) and when David O' Selznick, an American producer then, asked him to direct the classic Daphne du Maurier's "Rebecca" (1940) starring Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine. He then went on to direct more classics - "Foreign Correspondent" (1940 - Joel McCrea, Lariane Day, Herbert Marshall. George Sanders), his comedy, "Mr & Mrs Smith" (1941 - Robert Montogomery, Carole Lombard, Gene Raymond, Jack Carson), "Suspicion" (1941 - Joan Fontaine, Cary Grant), "Saboteur" (1942 - Robert Cummings, Priscilla Lane), "Shadow Of A Doubt" (1943 - Teresa Wright, Joseph Cotten) , "Lifeboat" (1944 - Tallulah Bankhead, William Bendix, Walter Slezak) and "Spellbound" (1945 - Gregory Peck, Ingrid Bergman).

From there, he produced and directed (and even made cameo appearences in his movies) many, many wonderful suspenseful classics...
He was awarded with a American Film Institute (AFI) Life Achievement Award in February 1979 and was also knighted later that year. Alfred Hitchcock died in his sleep on 29th April 1980 due to renal failure.
Although he has long gone, his brilliant major contribution to the filmdom remains...
