...penang famous prawn mee...

Everywhere you go in Penang for prawn mee (hokkien mee)...there will be a stall with a signage that says "Penang Famous Hokkien Mee". How do you classify "famous"? To me, it's not the number of bowls the noodle seller sells, but the taste has got be equally good. Honestly, there are a few good ones, but yet not that famous.

One of the, is Ah Chai Bayan Baru Hokkien Mee. The stall is located in Top Taste Coffee Shop, in the corner and junction of Lorong Kampung Jawa 7. The coffee shop can hardly be missed, as it is located in the shop block (near Public Bank) and there is a tau chooi (soya bean drink) stall directly opposite.

Ah Chai Hokkien Mee has the make of what hokkien mee should taste like. The noodles and tau geh and kangkong are blanced to a good texture...not too soft. The soup is just nice...do not have the strong smell of prawn shells nor smell of chili (which I personally cannot stand). It is not too diluted nor too sweet. I do not really like the ones in Greenhouse (over-rated by non locals) and the one near Sungai Pinang (let me find out the name of the stall - this one has too strong a smell and taste of chili padi).
P/S thanks for the pic Eddie :)

The other good one, that I can think off right now, is the one being sold in Sungai Dua market in the morning. This old uncle, starts early in the morning. This stall is located IN the market. There is another one outside the market (which is crowded, but not that good). This uncle's is generous with his garnishing. Just try asking for more fried shallots or eggs. He even has this big chunks of pork belly, that he will cut up if you request for it.

Well, actually Hokkien Mee is not exactly my favourite, but then, I do take it sometimes. I am quite particular with the taste of the soup. I do not take mine with the blended/grinded chili paste, therefore I can be a judge on the soup. A good soup must not be too stench with prawns, must not be too sweet (or artificially sweetened with sugar or msg), too murky, too diluted, too oily or taste like drinking water!!!
